Maria Callas Tribute Acts: Nicola Kirsch

Nicola Kirsch studied singing and piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She then went abroad to study with the artistic partner of Maria Callas, the legendary tenor, Giuseppe di Stefano.

Her first professional engagement came in 1977 when she sang the role of Mozart’s ‘Queen of the Night’ at Bangor University on recommendation of the Welsh National Opera.

In 1981 she moved to Spain to work and study under Jose Carreras’ teacher, Jaime Francisco Puig. This culminated in a chorus and small roles contract in Barcelona’s Opera House, The Gran Teatro del Liceo.

Her solo career took off in an unexpected direction in December 2000 when, on a whim, she entered and won the live final of Granada TV’s ‘Stars In Their Eyes ‘ as Maria Callas. The programme was seen by 14 million viewers and she received almost 500,000 votes in one hour of voting. Her success won her a major recording contract and several prestigious concert and television appearances including The Royal Albert Hall, Cardiff Millennium Stadium, The Gerry Kelly Show, Dennis Norden’s ‘Music for You’, Gloria Hunniford’s ‘Open House’ and Granada’s ‘My Favourite Hymns’ amongst others. In 2001 her CD was nominated for a Classical Brit Award and stayed in the top 20 of the Classic FM chart for 3 months.

Although she won ‘STARS’ singing an operatic aria, she has a vast repertoire which embraces both Opera and popular songs in several languages from Musicals and Film.
